Jingning county is located in western Pingliang, in central-eastern Gansu province. Covering a total area of 2,193 square kilometers, the county administers 24 townships, one urban community, 333 administrative villages and 15 residential communities, with a permanent population of 348,000.

Jingning has a long history and rich cultural heritage. It is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Fuxi, the legendary ancestor of Chinese civilization. The county is also home to 148 cultural heritage sites associated with the Yangshao and Qijia cultures. In modern history, Jingning became a revolutionary landmark, with the Red Army passing through the region five times during the Long March.

The county has been developing a dynamic local economy guided by a development strategy that prioritizes agriculture while strengthening industrial growth. Jingning is accelerating the development of six major industrial chains centered on Jingning apples, Pingliang red beef and specialty vegetables.

In 2025, Jingning reported a gross domestic product of 11.96 billion yuan, up 5.6 percent year-on-year.
