Among Pingliang's rich intangible cultural heritage, shehuo stands out as one of the most vibrant and enduring folk traditions. Rooted in the loess lands of eastern Gansu, it has been passed down for more than a thousand years and remains an integral part of local festive celebrations.

Evolving from ancient rituals honoring deities and praying for peace, prosperity and a good harvest, shehuo has gradually developed into a colorful spectacle featuring a wide range of traditional performances. Today, it is both a festive celebration and an expression of people's hopes for good fortune and a prosperous year ahead.

When the rhythmic beat of drums and gongs echoes across villages, over fields and through the hills, people of all ages gather to welcome the procession. Wherever the shehuo parade passes, firecrackers crackle, banners flutter and performers in dazzling costumes fill the streets with energy and excitement, creating a joyful atmosphere.

Pingliang's shehuo embraces a rich variety of performance arts, including stilt walking, land boats, yangko dancing, drum performances and folk parades. It also showcases a wide range of traditional craftsmanship, from folk painting and costume making to the performance of traditional musical instruments.
